Amish Onion Fritters are crispy on the outside with a tender, flavorful interior, making them a perfect snack, side dish, or appetizer. Combining finely chopped onions with a seasoned batter, these fritters are fried to golden perfection. Easy to prepare and irresistibly delicious!

Ingredients

For the Fritters:

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Optional: Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Onions:

  1. Chop Onions – Peel and finely chop the onions. Place them in a bowl and set aside.

Make the Batter:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients – In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined.
  3. Combine Wet & Dry Ingredients – Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a thick batter forms.
  4. Fold in Onions – Gently fold the chopped onions into the batter, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Fry the Fritters:

  1. Heat the Oil – Pour enough vegetable oil into a large skillet to cover the bottom by about ½ inch. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches approximately 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the Fritters – Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flattening them slightly with the back of the spoon. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  3. Drain Excess Oil – Remove the fritters from the skillet and drain them on paper towels.

Serve:

  1. Garnish & Serve – Serve warm, garnished with chopped parsley if desired. Pair with dipping sauces like sour cream, ketchup, or ranch dressing.

  • Storage: Store leftover fritters in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10 minutes or until crispy and heated through.
