Amish White Bread is a soft, slightly sweet homemade bread perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying fresh with butter. With simple pantry ingredients and an easy preparation method, it’s ideal for both novice and experienced bakers.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Add oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn to coat, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Loaves: Punch down the dough, divide it in half, and shape into two loaves. Place each loaf into a greased 9×5-inch pan.
  6. Second Rise: Cover pans with a damp cloth and let rise until the dough is about 1 inch above the pan, approximately 30 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake loaves for 30 minutes until golden brown and they sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool: Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For variations, consider substituting sugar with honey or adding herbs like rosemary for a unique flavor.
  • Use a thermometer to ensure the bread is fully baked (internal temperature: 190°F/88°C).
