Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

For the Frosting (Cream Cheese or Buttercream):

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream (if needed for consistency)

Instructions

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until smooth.
  5. Slowly add the hot coffee or water, stirring until fully incorporated.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Frosting:

  1. Beat cream cheese and butter until light and fluffy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.
  3. Stir in vanilla extract and heavy cream (if needed) to reach the desired consistency.

Assembling the Cake:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting over the top.
  2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake.
  3. Smooth the frosting and decorate as desired.
