These Blackberry Dumplings are a comforting and nostalgic dessert featuring soft, fluffy dumplings simmered in a rich, sweet-tart blackberry sauce. Made with simple ingredients and ready in just 30 minutes, this old-fashioned treat is best served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

For the Blackberry Sauce:

  • 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  • Prepare the Blackberry Sauce:
    • In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract.
    • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until the blackberries soften.
  • Make the Dumplings:
    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg.
    • Gradually add milk, stirring until just combined. The dough should be soft but not too sticky.
  • Cook the Dumplings:
    • Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough into the simmering blackberry sauce, spacing them evenly.
    • Cover the saucepan and cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid to allow the dumplings to steam.
  • Serve:
    • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Avoid over-mixing the dough for lighter, fluffier dumplings.
  • Keep the lid on while cooking to allow the dumplings to steam properly.
