Bulgogi Beef (Korean-Style Barbecue) is a flavorful, marinated beef dish cooked to perfection. Thinly sliced beef is marinated in a savory-sweet sauce and grilled or pan-fried, resulting in tender, caramelized meat with a delicious smoky flavor. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (rib-eye, sirloin, or flank steak)
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean chili paste) or sriracha (optional for heat)
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Marinade:

    • In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, and gochujang (if using).
  • Marinate the Beef:

    • Place the thinly sliced beef in a ziplock bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over it. Seal and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours for more flavor).
  • Cook the Beef:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
    • Add the marinated beef to the pan in batches (to avoid overcrowding) and cook for about 2-3 minutes per side until the beef is cooked through and slightly caramelized.
  • Serve:

    • Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with steamed rice, lettuce wraps, or your favorite Korean side dishes (banchan).

Notes

  • Vegetarian Option: Use tofu or mushrooms as a substitute for beef.
  • Spicy Option: Add more gochujang or a diced jalapeño for additional heat.
  • Side Pairings: Serve with kimchi, pickled vegetables, or sautéed spinach for a complete meal.
