Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450 g) beef round steak, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 200°F (95°C) to keep the cooked steaks warm.
  • Tenderize the Steak: Use a meat mallet to pound the steak pieces to about ½ inch thick for a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Prepare the Coating: In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Make the Egg Wash: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, buttermilk, and hot sauce (if using).
  • Coat the Steaks: Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, dip it in the egg mixture, and coat it in the flour mixture again to create a crispy, flavorful crust.
  • Fry the Steaks: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Keep the Steaks Warm: Transfer the cooked steaks to a baking sheet and place them in the oven to keep warm while frying the remaining steaks.
  • Serve: Serve warm with gravy, mashed potatoes, or your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Spicy Kick: Add extra hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the egg wash for more heat.
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version of this dish.
  • Make-Ahead Tip: Prepare the breading and coating in advance, but fry the steaks just before serving to maintain their crispy texture.
  • Gravy: Make a homemade white gravy with the pan drippings for an authentic Southern touch.
