Chinese Onion Pepper Steak is a savory and flavorful dish featuring tender beef strips, crisp bell peppers, and a savory, slightly sweet sauce made with soy sauce, garlic, and ginger. This dish is made in an electric pressure cooker, making it quick and easy to prepare for a weeknight dinner. With a rich broth base and a hint of brown sugar, it’s a satisfying and comforting meal that pairs perfectly with steamed rice.

 

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds beef strips
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced thick
  • 1/2 onion, minced thickly
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  • Place the beef, peppers, and onions in an electric pressure cooker.
  • Add the garlic powder, ground ginger, soy sauce, black pepper, and brown sugar to the beef and peppers.
  • Pour in the beef broth and stir to combine.
  • Secure the lid on the pressure cooker and set it to high pressure for 15 minutes.
  • Once done, perform a quick release or choose a natural release if you prefer the steak to crumble.
  • Open the lid and press the Cancel button. Switch the pressure cooker to sauté mode.
  • In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup cold water with 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.
  • Stir the cornstarch mixture into the beef and pepper mixture in the Instant Pot.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Notes

  • Serve this dish with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
  • For a spicier kick, add a little chili paste or crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce.
