With smooth mashed potatoes topped with a golden, crispy crust, this casserole is a twist on traditional duchess potatoes, making it simpler to prepare and serve. The combination of butter, cream, and seasonings creates a comforting, flavorful dish that’s perfect for special occasions, family dinners, or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

For the Casserole:

  • 3 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Topping:

  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Cook the Potatoes:
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.

  • Mash the Potatoes:
Mash the cooked potatoes with a potato masher or use a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.

  • Add the Cream and Seasonings:
Stir in the softened butter, sour cream, heavy cream (or milk), garlic powder, onion powder, and nutmeg (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix until everything is well incorporated and the potatoes are smooth.

  • Transfer to Baking Dish:
Transfer the mashed potatoes into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Smooth the top with a spatula.

  • Add Cheese (Optional):
If desired, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.

  • Bake:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is heated through.

  • Garnish and Serve:
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Cheesy Version: Add 1-2 cups of shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or parmesan) to the mashed potatoes for extra flavor and creaminess.
  • Herb-Infused: Add fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or chives to the mashed potatoes for added flavor.
  • Garlic Lovers: Roast a few garlic cloves and mash them with the potatoes for a richer, garlicky flavor.
  • Make-Ahead: Prepare the mashed potatoes and refrigerate them overnight. Bake when ready to serve.
  • Freezing: This casserole freezes well. Store tightly wrapped for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight and reheat in the oven.
