Ingredients

  • 10 oz mozzarella string cheese (about 10 sticks)
  • 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Cayenne pepper (optional, for spice)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cheese: Cut each mozzarella stick into bite-sized pieces.
  • Set Up Dredging Station: Arrange three bowls:
    • Bowl 1: Flour
    • Bowl 2: Beaten eggs mixed with milk
    • Bowl 3: Italian bread crumbs (add cayenne if using)
  • Coat the Cheese:
    • Dredge each cheese piece in flour, dip in egg mixture, then coat in bread crumbs.
    • For extra crunch, repeat the egg and bread crumb steps.
  • Heat the Oil: Pour 2 inches of vegetable oil into a skillet and heat to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the Cheese Bites:
    • Carefully place coated cheese pieces into hot oil, frying for about 30 seconds, until golden brown.
  • Drain & Serve: Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with marinara sauce, ranch, or garlic aioli.

Notes

  • Double-coating helps prevent cheese from leaking.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and bread crumbs.
  • Use different cheeses like cheddar, gouda, or pepper jack for variety.
