Greek Butter Cookies, also known as Koulourakia, are traditional Greek pastries with a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. These slightly sweet cookies are perfect for holidays like Easter, or simply as a delightful treat with coffee or tea. Easy to make with simple ingredients, they can be shaped into twists, braids, or rings, making them customizable for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Make the Dough: In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla extract, beating until well combined.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Shape the Cookies: Divide the dough into small portions and shape them into twists, braids, or rings. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Egg Wash: Beat the additional egg with milk or water, and brush the cookies with the egg wash. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  • Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown around the edges.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • Add Flavors: For a citrus twist, add lemon or orange zest to the dough.
  • Change the Toppings: Substitute sesame seeds with chopped nuts, or sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar for extra flavor.
  • Make it Vegan: Use plant-based butter and a flax egg to make these cookies vegan-friendly.
