Homemade Cheesy Breadsticks are the ultimate comfort food—soft, buttery breadsticks topped with gooey melted cheese and a hint of garlic. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for sharing as an appetizer or serving alongside your favorite meals. The golden, cheesy crust and pillowy soft interior make these breadsticks irresistible, and they pair perfectly with marinara sauce or can be enjoyed on their own for a satisfying snack.

Ingredients

For the Breadsticks:

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

For the Topping:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  • Make the Dough:

    • Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until the mixture becomes frothy.
    • Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, olive oil, salt, and garlic powder. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
    • Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
    • Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Assemble the Breadsticks:

    • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Shape the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle (about 12×8 inches).
    • Add the Topping: Place the rolled-out dough onto a greased baking sheet. Brush the dough with half of the melted butter. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and oregano evenly over the dough.
    • Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the breadsticks are golden brown around the edges.
  • Finish and Serve:

    • Once the breadsticks are out of the oven, brush the remaining melted butter over the top. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt, if desired, and cut into strips. Serve with marinara sauce or enjoy as is.

Notes

  • Herbed Breadsticks: Add finely chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, or basil to the dough or sprinkle over the cheese topping for extra flavor.
  • Spicy Cheesy Breadsticks: Sprinkle red pepper flakes on top of the cheese for a spicy kick.
  • Cheese Variety: Use a blend of mozzarella, cheddar, or provolone cheese for a different flavor profile.
  • Garlic Parmesan: Add more garlic and Parmesan cheese on top for an extra garlic-butter flavor.
  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the dough ahead of time, let it rise, and refrigerate it overnight. Let it come to room temperature before adding the cheese and baking.
