Whether you decorate them with icing or enjoy them plain, these cookies are a delightful treat for holidays, birthdays, or everyday snacking.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • Additional sugar for rolling

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prep: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
  • Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, almond extract (if using), and milk until well combined.
  • Combine: Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Shape: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions, roll into balls, and coat in sugar. Place on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use brown sugar instead of half of the granulated sugar.
  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking for thicker cookies.
  • Decorate with royal icing or sprinkles for festive occasions.
