Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup honey

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts or raisins (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven:
Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan or bundt pan.

  • Mix dry ingredients:
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

  • Combine wet ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, beat together oil, honey, and applesauce. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing until smooth.

  • Combine wet and dry:
Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Fold in nuts or raisins, if using.

  • Bake:
Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35–40 minutes (9×13 pan) or 45–50 minutes (bundt pan), or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  • Cool and serve:
Let cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or frosted.

Notes

  • Vegan option: Use flax eggs and maple syrup instead of honey.

  • Gluten-free: Substitute a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.

  • Add-ins: Mix in chopped apples, cranberries, or shredded coconut.

  • Frosting ideas: Try cream cheese frosting or a simple powdered sugar glaze.
