Indian Frybread is a crispy, golden bread with a soft, pillowy interior, perfect for sweet or savory toppings. This simple, quick recipe is a versatile dish, whether served as a dessert with honey or transformed into a savory frybread taco for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the warm water, stirring until the dough comes together. Adjust the water as needed. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes.
  • Heat the Oil: In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  • Shape and Fry the Bread: Divide the dough into balls, about the size of a golf ball. Flatten each ball into a ¼ inch thick disc and create a small hole in the center with your finger. Fry the discs one or two at a time in the hot oil for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels.
  • Serve: Serve warm. For sweet frybread, top with honey, jam, or powdered sugar. For savory, fill with taco ingredients like ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese for a “frybread taco.”

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a skillet or oven at 350°F for a few minutes to regain crispness.
