  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

For Topping:

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prep

    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients

    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  • Cut in Butter

    • Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to rub cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients

    • In a separate bowl, whisk milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  • Form the Dough

    • Gradually add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined.
    • Do not overmix – the dough should be slightly sticky.
  • Shape & Cut

    • Transfer dough to a floured surface, gently knead a few times, and shape into a 1-inch thick disc.
    • Cut into 8 wedges or use a biscuit cutter for round scones.
  • Bake

    • Place scones on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
    • Brush with milk or egg wash for a golden crust.
    • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  • Cool & Serve

    • Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
    • Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or clotted cream.

Notes

  • Add-Ins: Fold in chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts before shaping the dough.
  • Savory Scones: Omit sugar and add cheese, or herbs
  • Fluffier Scones: Use cold butter and handle the dough minimally.
  • Stronger Orange/Lemon Flavor: Add zest to the dough for a citrusy twist.
