Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (plus more for greasing)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
  • Additional butter for brushing (optional)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon yeast, 1/4 cup sugar, and warm milk. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  • Combine Ingredients: Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix, then add softened butter and stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough, divide it into 12 pieces, and shape into balls. Place on a greased baking sheet and let rise for 30-45 minutes.
  • Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Serve: Brush with melted butter and dust with powdered sugar before serving

Notes

  • Serve with butter, cream cheese, or fruit jam for added sweetness.
  • For a savory twist, use the rolls for breakfast sandwiches.
  • Flavored butter (cinnamon or honey) adds a nice touch.
